Tell me something: what’s in your news feed every morning?
If you’re like me, probably some pointless crap like this:
Or maybe something a little bit like this:
Or this:
Uhmm…
Now let me ask you a question.
Does this shit make you laugh?
Does it make you feel less alone in the world?
Does it make you a happier and a smarter and a better person?
Or does it actually make you dumber?
. . .
I WANT TO HELP YOU
. . .
Guys, I want to help you.
When you see me in your news feed, I want to make you
L O L .
Like, I want to make you LOL when you’re sitting alone at work. Or in class. Or in the library or in Starbucks or in any one of those ridiculously inappropriate places for LOL-ing.
I want to make you LOL until everyone around you is staring at you like you’re some sort of a FREAKING WEIRDO. (Which you are– but I am too, so don’t worry, it’s cool.)
Not only will this bring cheer to your morning, but it will also bring cheer to all the people who are shamelessly staring at you, wondering WHAT IN THE HECK YOU ARE LAUGHING AT. (Laughter, after all, is contagious.)
Can you think of a better way to start your Monday morning?
I think not.

I’m holding you to your words, lady! I expect to see some really funny shit on my newsfeed. No more of the “Therese just completed level 3 of farmville” or “I’m doing my laundry” crap ;)
I admire your intentions to rid the world of stupid waste of internet space facebook updates.
Hahaha… please do!
Okay, you’re on my newsfeed. Do not let me down, or I will smite you :-)
…was that creepy..?
Haha… the pressure’s on :)
Hi Therese,
I love your enthusiasm! This posts reminds me of a discussion I recently had with some friends. The main question being: does social media put pressure on us to be impossibly witty, funny, creative and smart on a consistent basis. Since we have the time to craft messages, edit pictures, etc we are always trying to represent ourselves in an un-humanly perfect light.
I’m interested to hear your thoughts on this.
Either way your site is cool as shit and you seem super fun :)
Matt
p.s.
Hi Matt,
I think you have a good point here. What’s funny is that I’ve been e-mailing with a reader lately who is basically saying the same thing– that she has to put up this “Facebook wall” of perfection both in her real life & in her newsfeed. I’m not sure that social media puts this pressure on us, but I think social media does create a place where our pre-existing perfectionistic tendencies thrive. Maybe I’ll explore this question in more depth in a future post– it’s certainly worth exploring.
Thanks!
Therese
p.s. What’s the p.s.? ;)
Lol apparently I got distracted at the end of my message :-P I wish I could remember!
That’s a good point though that social media can bring out these pre-existing tendencies – maybe they make it even easier to do so. I find that the more I put myself out there (via social media, videos, blog posts) I care less about being perfect. When your in that constant state of creation you just don’t have time to worry about what people think of you.
Oh I think I remember the p.s. lol. It had something to do with not being able to be notified of your response to my comment. The only reason I knew you responded was because you followed me on twitter and I thought hhey this girl looks familiar. Not sure if you have an option to do that but it might be helpful :)
Agreed– believe it or not, I’m not very technically competent. I’ve been wondering how to include this notification option for quite some time, but keep putting if off. *Bringing it to the top of my list now.* Thanks Matt!
[…] On the flip side, if there are people or pages who deliver value and meaning to your life, then adding them to your news feed might actually be time well spent. Like– you know, maybe pages like All Groan Up and The Unlost (just sayin’). The stuff in your news feed should be making you smarter, more centered, and more grounded– not the other way around. […]
